Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre].... - Lot 10 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre]. André Thouin (1747-1824), botanist and administrator of the Museum]. Autograph manuscript, entitled : " Sent to the Cen of St Pierre for Sunday 23rd Xbre 1792 ". 4 pp. in-4. Important manuscript concerning the plantations of the property he set up on the islet of the Essonne river from the end of 1792 on the site of the former Didot paper mill (property destroyed in 1974). No less than 1710 trees and shrubs were shipped to him. "Mr. de St Pierre wants to plant a living hay on the edge of a ditch filled with water, in order to sell his possessions. This hay must be made up of different species of trees, some of which will grow freely and form tall trees. The length of this fence is 95 toises. By placing these trees and shrubs 4 inches apart, one inside the other, it will hold 3 per foot, and 18 per toise, by means of which 1710 individuals of all kinds of trees and shrubs will be required. All the wild white thorn, apple and pear trees that have not been grafted to me can be taken from the Buffon nursery first. Plus all the wildlings from the Garden nursery that are no longer in a state to be grafted. And then a few individuals from the trees below. "Following is a long list of the different species and their numbers: "Virginia Roses 100. St. John's Wort Spirits 6. White lilac, red lilac 6. Trees of Judea 50 []".
