Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814),... - Lot 4 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814), botanist and writer, traveller and academician, succeeded Buffon as intendant of the King's Garden. L.A.S. to the botanist André Thouin (1747-1824). Paris, December 8, 1792. 1 p. ¼ in-8. Bernardin de Saint-Pierre puts the accounts and work of the King's Garden [Museum] in order. He asked Thouin to come to his home to apostillate the memoirs of glaziery, locksmithing and masonry, corresponding to the work he had ordered. "I also need some clarification on items of labels and glass bells spent on one hand on the maintenance of the garden and on the other hand on the particular memories of the locksmith and the glazier. I would ask Mr. Thouin not to order any new work in the future without the architect's permission, in order to put the accounts in order". The locksmith's articles seem excessively expensive to him. "There are, among others, 300 labels raised to more than 500#. Mr. Thouin must feel more than anyone else the need to follow a method in the work order, otherwise each one would have to do what he needs on his own, and the result at the end of the year is that the expense exceeds the income. I speak of this all the more freely to Mr. Thouin because no one is more hostile to anarchy than he is, and I would like to see the same order reign in all parts of the establishment as that which reigns in his greenhouses []".
