In the decade of the 1880s, Rodin realized what can be considered his most important work: The Gates of Hell. The artist, then in full possession of his means, created for it a large quantity of sculptures intended to fit into the monumental composition. Among the subjects modelled for this titanic work: Eve. Thought, as early as 1881, to be placed as a counterpart to Adam on the sides of The Gates of Hell, Rodin had to make up his mind to let it sleep for almost ten years without touching it. In fact, her model, Maria Abbruzezzi, who was pregnant during the posing sessions, changed her morphology as time went by, making, according to Rodin, her work by nature impossible. It wasn't until 1899 that the artist decided to have two copies cast in bronze, which were exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts.
