FRENCH SCHOOL First half of the 17th century... - Lot 38 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
FRENCH SCHOOL First half of the 17th century Portrait in bust of a man of war, three-quarter length, in studded armour, decorated with a cross, with the Annunciation medallion. Oil on canvas (Rentokilage; old varnish dirty) H. 81 - L. 64 cm Wooden frame and gilded stucco surmounted by a knotted ribbon and a garland of oak leaves (small lacks) Regarded according to family tradition as the portrait of Bernard of Liège (born around 1650), knight of Saint John of Jerusalem. Our portrait is similar to those of the men of war in the reign of Henry IV, such as Maximilian of Béthune (1559 - 1641), Duke of Sully (1606), superintendent of fortifications and grand master of artillery.
